Lilly Pulitzer is a favorite in the Nantucket Shop! She has become a household name with her iconic style and vibrant signature patterns. We absolutely love all of her beautiful designs. They take us to the beach and remind us of those wonderful warmer days ahead. Our own Mary Beth Basil puts it perfectly: “Lilly’s bright colors and patterns make every day look like Spring. Even when it’s a blizzard outside, it’s always bright and happy in the Nantucket Shop with Lilly”.
Lilly’s life was as colorful as her prints. At a young age of 21, Lilly married Peter Pulitzer (whose grandfather was the namesake for the Pulitzer Prize) and moved to Palm Beach, Florida. There, she opened up a juice stand in the orange groves that her husband owned. She soon realized that juicing while keeping her dresses clean was a difficult task. To fix this problem, she started creating simple shift dresses with bright, colorful patterns to hide the juice stains. Little did she know that these dresses would catch the eyes of others as well. When her dresses started to outsell her juices, she expanded her clothes business and established her own line. These dresses quickly became known as “Lillys”.
Everyone loved her designs; she even caught the attention of influential figures including her friend and former classmate, First Lady Jackie O. After she wore one of Lilly’s dresses for a photo shoot with Life Magazine, Lilly’s clothing became a must-have. Interestingly enough, the design that Jackie O wore was created out of kitchen curtain material!
Lilly’s clothing line became a high society brand and she became known as the “Queen of Prep”. Today, Lilly Pulitzer’s designers continue to create every print and pattern in their own print studio. Everything they create is original art and every print has “LILLY” hidden in it.
All of Lilly Pulitzer’s designs are iconic and beautiful. From the Elsa blouses to the beautifully detailed dresses and highly popular accessories and home goods, we are sure to have something for everyone at the Nantucket Shop. Now, don’t think that you can only wear Lilly’s prints during the Spring and Summer months. As Lilly said, “Life is a Party. Dress Like It”.
